Meet our Director of Preschool Mara Lestitian
Mara Lestitian comes to Penn Woods Classical Academy with over 25 years of early childhood teaching experience in the Pittsburgh area. The last three years were spent in a leadership position serving as a preschool director. A Pittsburgh native, Mara grew up in a family of Early Childhood Educators with a passion to learn alongside children, respect their development and honor their abilities.
She received her Bachelor’s degree from Bethany College, with a concentration in French and Education. While studying in France at the Sorbonne, Mara was given the unique opportunity tovolunteer her time in a Parisian preschool and present to the French Council speaking on early learning in America. Mara continues to participate in professional development and volunteer opportunities in her community. She is an active member in her church as well as the Christian homeschool program, A One Room Schoolhouse.
As a mother of six—one daughter and five boys, including my youngest, 8-year-old twin boys—Mara understands the importance of a classical Christian education that nurtures the whole child, recognizing their God-given potential.
“I believe every child is capable of great
things and should experience the joy and wonder of God’s creation through hands-on learning,
project based explorations and rich, meaningful experiences. My goal is to foster a love of
learning that lays a strong foundation for both academic and spiritual growth.”
“I am honored to be joining such a wonderful school community where children are valued as
capable collaborators equipped with extraordinary potentials for learning. I am blessed to work
alongside children and to serve families in the community.”

A Day in the Life of Our Preschool Classroom
Arrival – As the children are greeted and welcomed into the classroom, they prepare for a joyful day of discovery and learning. Each child takes ownership of a daily chore, fostering responsibility and a sense of contribution. The children sign in (find their names) to acknowledge their presence-an early practice of accountability and pre-writing skills. With a calming atmosphere guiding the transition, children settle in with carefully prepared table provocations that invite curiosity, fine motorwork, concentration, and quiet exploration. This gentle start allows them to engage meaningfully while preparing their hearts and minds for the day ahead.
Morning Meeting – Our day begins as a whole group with a thoughtful
and peaceful gathering in our meeting area. At this time we prepare
our hearts and minds for the day ahead, taking time in attentive
awareness to listen and share.
We take time to pray, and listen to a Bible verse, centering our day on
God and inviting His presence into our learning. Children are
encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences, nurturing a
sense of belonging, gratitude and friendship. Each child’s attendance is
acknowledged and celebrated, recognizing we are unique and
wonderfully made.
Together we read our message, sing songs, stretch our bodies, review
skills, and discuss the day’s projections -all helping children grow in
attentiveness, fluency and confidence.
Through these rhythms, children practice habits of attentiveness, and
learn to respect the people around them. This time together cultivates a
sense of gratitude and lays a foundation for a day filled with purpose
and joy.
Small Group Learning – During small group instruction, children receive
focused, developmentally appropriate lessons in literacy, language
development, mathematical thinking, science investigation and Nature
study.
● Language and Literacy is a time to build pre-reading and early
writing skills through hands-on purposeful activities. Children listen
attentively to Bible stories, rich literature, work in their journals and
use writing tools to form letters. This time strengths phonetic
awareness and cultivates vocabulary.
● Math instruction lays a strong foundation in number sense and
mathematical thinking through hands-on exploration and guided
practice. Children begin to count with confidence, form numerals,
gain an understanding of spatial relations, and recognize patterns
in God’s world.
● Our Science and Nature Study invites children to observe, wonder
and delight in the world God has created. We explore natural
phenomena, seasonal changes and the living world around us,
cultivating habits of observation and stewardship while growing in
wisdom and knowledge. We use our senses to marvel at the
beauty and order in God’s design.
Discovery and Project Work – Our Discovery time allows children the
opportunity to freely explore the classroom, collaborate with peers,
choose and move through the different areas of learning. This time in
our schedule allows children to work independently and cooperatively
while learning to use materials intentionally and purposely. It is a time
of open ended discovery which fosters confidence, self-regulation and
adherence to classroom expectations. Children are encouraged to work
through challenges, use critical thinking skills and build confidence.
Children are guided to care for materials and return items to their
proper place. These simple yet important tasks foster respect and help
us find joy in the order and beauty of our classroom.
Outdoor Classroom – Time spent outdoors enables children the space
and fresh air for active play, allowing children to run, climb, balance, and
explore God’s creation. Movement is essential for developing strength,
coordination, and self-regulation. While exploring the outdoors children
engage their whole bodies in meaningful work and joyful movement.
We use all of our senses as we explore the outdoors.
Snack – When we arrive back inside, we prepare for a small snack,
washing our hands and setting a place at our table. Once gathered, we
join in prayer, thanking God for our food and the friends gathered with
us. Snacks are served family style. Children learn to take turns passing
bowls, scooping food, and pouring water from small pitchers. This time
together allows us to practice developing virtues such as kindness,
patience and responsibility. After snack, children work to clear their
spaces, clean tables and wash pitchers.
Creative Arts – Art and music appreciation are an integral part of our
classroom, allowing children time to engage with great works of beauty
and find joy in their own creativity. We spend this time observing and
discussing famous paintings, listening to beautiful music, and creating
our own works of art using a variety of art tools and mediums. This
creative process nurtures both fine motor skills and an appreciation for
color, shape, composition and the beauty around us.
Closing Meeting – As our day draws to a close, we meet to reflect on
our experiences, pray to God with gratitude for the day we shared, and
prepare for our transition home. Our closing Meeting time is a joyful
ending to a busy day.
Lunch Bunch – is offered as a group activity and shared mealtime. Each
week the children will learn valuable skills in nutrition, cooking and
preparing meals. We will joyfully participate in a different cooking
experience each week.
*Virtue & Habit Formation*
Early character formation is integral in our daily life. Through modeled
behavior, gentle guidance, prayer and purposeful work, children learn the
value of patience, gratitude, attentiveness, perseverance, kindness, and
responsibility. A carefully curated environment together with purposeful
activities and the joy of working together, provide opportunities to practice
these virtues while fostering a sense of order and a love of learning.
*Through each carefully chosen activity, we cultivate a love of
learning, an appreciation for beauty, and a heart inclined toward truth
and goodness.
Our classroom is a place where childhood is honored, wonder is nurtured, and learning is a joyful pursuit. Our classroom is intentionally
designed to foster habits of attention, virtue, and delight in the world
around us—laying a foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
