Meet Penn Woods Classical Academy’s Founding Head of School, Dr. Eric Stennett

Penn Woods Classical Academy has selected Dr. Eric Stennett to serve as the founding Head of School.

Dr. Eric Stennett is an accomplished and highly experienced educational leader with a passion for Christian and Classical Education and a deep commitment to the development of students. With a diverse background and strong academic foundation, Dr. Stennett has dedicated his career to shaping young minds and fostering excellence in education. Stennett holds a bachelor’s degree in Geology and Earth Science from Wittenberg University, a Masters in Education from Wright State University, and a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University.

After serving our country as a U.S. Army Reserve Officer and Enlisted Soldier from 1989-2006, he began working as a Middle School Science teacher and quickly moved from the role of Assistant Principal to Principal at Shaler Area Middle School in 2004, working with over 600 students. In 2008, Stennett oversaw all systems of operations, budgeting, and personnel as Principal at Hampton Township Middle School. With a lifelong love of learning and a growth mindset, he became an adjunct professor at Point Park University, teaching at all levels of the doctoral program. Stennett continues to chair and serve on dissertation committees.

With a profound commitment to the Christian classical education approach, Dr. Stennett left the public education field in pursuit of a vision inspired by the potential of this transformative educational paradigm in the region. “At PWCA, we have the unique opportunity to be part of a school that strives to cultivate young minds, improve the heart, and nurture the spirit, all within a safe and joyous learning environment,” said the new Head of School. Dr. Stennett was unanimously endorsed by Penn Woods’ Board of Directors and also recommended by the K-12 Education Office of Hillsdale College upon a rigorous vetting process. Penn Woods Classical Academy intends to implement Hillsdale’s K-12 American Classical Curriculum and has been receiving startup support from Hillsdale College K-12 Education Office. “Our aim is to prepare virtuous citizens who not only understand civic responsibility but who also emerge as the next generation of leaders.”

Dr. Stennett has begun the honored work of preparing for next year’s opening and is scheduling school tours as well as informational meetings for interested families.

Faculty & Staff

Victoria Kern

Business Manager

Victoria has over 16 years of administrative, sales, and customer service experience. Victoria served on Peters Township Soccer Association Board as Marketing Director for 3 years. In this position, she successfully planned and conducted various community fundraisers and events.  Victoria is community service oriented and believes that servant leadership is an important element of her discipleship journey. She founded and continues to lead a youth track program for children ages 4 and older in the greater Pittsburgh area. This inspirational running program consisted of coaching over 400 kids and providing many children and their families with the opportunity to experience the joy, friendships, and wellness benefits that come with establishing healthy habits such as increasing physical activity. Victoria currently attends Geneva College in pursuit of a BA degree in Human Resources. Victoria is a loving wife and a mother of two children and understands both the individual and societal importance of providing an excellent and well-rounded education to our youth.

  • Mrs. Rebecca Pettigrew

    Board President

    Rebecca earned a BA in Literature and Art History from Saint Mary’s College, and a minor in Italian from the University of Notre Dame. She received her MA in Systematic Theology from Boston College and then completed 4 more years of doctoral coursework and passed written and oral examinations for her PhD in Theology from Boston College, all before marrying and setting dissertation aside to raise her 5 children. She classically homeschooled for several years and worked as a religious educator of adults for 11 years. As a full-time volunteer Rebecca spent 12 years developing and leading Christian educational and evangelization programming for children and families and cultivating a Christian ethos at her children’s local Catholic school. In 2019, she Co-founded Don Bosco Children’s Foundation, Uganda.  The Foundation built a large High School and recently built and operates a Primary school with 120+ vulnerable children in Western Uganda and provides funding for student sponsorships, infrastructural improvements, agricultural projects, and material and medical relief to village children and families. Rebecca is optimistic about the impact K-12 educational reform can have on individuals, communities, and nations and is dedicated to bringing Classical Christian Education to the South Hills of Pittsburgh. When she is not getting people excited about parting with their time, talent, and treasure for great causes, she is avidly reading the Great Books, History, and Political Philosophy, and enjoying her kids, critters, and the great outdoors. 

  • Mrs. Stacey West

    Secretary, Director

    Stacey H. West graduated from Emory University, received a Master's degree in French from Middlebury College and a culinary degree from the Cordon Bleu, Paris.  After several years of working in the culinary industry, including the Ritz Carlton, Buckhead, she left behind her career to start a family while also supporting her husband's demanding executive career path. She and her husband, Ed, have been supporters and donors to the mission of Hillsdale College for a decade. The West Family is blessed with four adult children who are now finding and marrying spouses who share their reverence for the covenant of marriage, the value of family and are striving to live God-centric lives.

  • Mr. Daniel Pettigrew

    Treasurer

    Dan received his BSE in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University and his MBA in Finance and Policy Studies from The University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business. He interned with Deloitte and Touche, NY and became a senior consultant for Andersen Consulting before taking time out for his MBA.  He joined George Group, Inc. upon matriculation and rose from manager to Principal between 1993 and 1995. He remained there until his recruitment by Oak Hill Capital Partners to act as an operational liaison for the then $7 million start-up enterprise of Caliber Collision Centers, the largest independent provider of collision repair services in the $30 Billion U.S. industry.  From 1997-2005, Dan rose from Vice President of Client services, to SVP of Technology and Integration, to SVP of Operations - Texas, to acting COO until being named CEO of the company which he’d helped to grow to $200 million in revenue. In 2006, desiring a change, Dan left Caliber for a three-year consulting stint with the private equity firm, Kidd and Company of Greenwich CT., as a Principal tasked with optimizing performance of existing portfolio companies, sourcing new investments and developing acquisition and investment strategies. In 2009, Dan joined Oaktree Capital Management, an Investment Management firm with over $80 Billion in assets, as an interim operating partner, providing oversight of evaluation and integration of investment properties. Finally ready for a more family-friendly life, in 2011, Dan moved his family to Pittsburgh and established his own company, Providence Home Medical, LP, a national mail order medical billing company. He is President and owner.  Dan is married to Rebecca and has 5 children, ages 15-26.  Together with Rebecca he founded and leads Don Bosco Children’s Foundation Uganda, is an active member of his parish, and enjoys facilitating discipleship groups in both older and younger demographics.  He is an unapologetic yet consistently disappointed Bears fan. 

  • Mrs. Kelly Gary

    Director

    Kelly received a BS in Elementary Education from Baldwin Wallace University and a M. Ed, in Reading and Language Arts from Duquesne University.  With 32 years in education, she has held leadership and training roles within private and public schools, and specializes in curriculum design and implementation, hiring and mentoring new teachers, pedagogical techniques, and classroom management. As a reading specialist, she is currently consulting for an autism learning center to design a specialized literacy curriculum that aligns with best practices in teaching reading and spelling. Kelly is trained in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) and is a Professional LETRS Facilitator. LETRS has earned International Dyslexia Association's (IDA) Accreditation and provides teachers with the skills they need to master the fundamentals of reading instruction.  Kelly is very involved with her church, St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, as a dance instructor and previous Sunday School teacher.  Kelly enjoys working with the Greek Orthodox Youth Association (GOYA) and is an active member of the congregation.

  • Mr. Andrew Hays

    Director

    Andy received a BA. in Economics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a MBA. from the University of Pittsburgh and was raised outside of Philadelphia.  Andy’s professional career was focused in middle market investment banking, private equity, and strategic planning. Early in his career Andy worked in various executive roles at Westinghouse Financial, where he started the Asset Sales & Syndications Group and Mellon Financial, where he ran the Private Placements Group.  In 2001, Andy co-founded the regional investment banking firm, Strategic Advisors, and since retiring in 2015 he served as a Senior Advisor to the family office-private equity group, Elk Lake Capital until 2024.  Andy has served on the Board of Directors of St. Clair Hospital, Bridgeway Capital, Inc., Mellon Financial Markets, LLC, as well as the boards of various middle market privately held businesses. Andy was raised in the Presbyterian faith and joined the Catholic faith in 1985.  Andy has served in various leadership roles at St. Catherine Laboure Parish including being a founding member of the newly formed Parish Pastoral Council.  Andy and his wife, Debbi, have two grown daughters and live in Mt. Lebanon, close to their families and their six grandchildren. Finally, Andy is an avid but not too talented golfer.

  • Mr. Frank Palermo

    Director

    Frank received his B.S. in Accounting from John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. Frank has over 43 years of experience in public accounting and banking. In 1983 the accounting firm was founded by Frank. Frank is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and the Pennsylvania Institute CPA’s and is a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation and Analysis. Frank has served on the board of several non-profit organizations and also on the board of directors of S&T Bankcorp, Inc where he serves as the Chairman of the Audit Committee.
